Day 1
Welcome to Kigali & Scenic Drive to Nyungwe Forest
Your Rwandan primate expedition begins with a warm morning pickup from your hotel or Kigali International Airport by your dedicated Saventra Safaris guide. Leaving Africa’s cleanest city behind, you will journey southwest toward Nyungwe National Park. Stop along the way in Huye for a relaxed lunch and a private tour of the National Museum of Rwanda to uncover the rich cultural stories of the region.
As you continue driving, watch the landscape shift into endless terraced green hills and mist-veiled mountain ranges. Arrive at the edge of Nyungwe National Park by late afternoon, settling into your boutique lodge surrounded by rolling tea plantations.
- Drive Time: Approximately 5–6 hours.
- Meals: Lunch and Dinner.
Day 2
Wild Chimpanzee Tracking & Thrilling Canopy Walk
Wake up to the cool mountain air and the echoing calls of the rainforest. Following an early morning briefing at the park headquarters, enter the deep emerald canopy with an expert park ranger to track wild chimpanzees. Nyungwe protects a thriving population of chimps, and finding them is an exhilarating sensory experience. You will hear them first—a chorus of distant hoots and pants escalating through the trees. Spend one unforgettable hour watching them play, forage, and swing effortlessly through the branches.
Return to the lodge for a warm lunch and a brief rest. In the afternoon, head back into the forest for the famous Nyungwe Canopy Walk. Trailing along a sturdy suspension bridge hanging high above the deep valley, you will capture unparalleled, bird’s-eye views of the ancient rainforest canopy, vibrant birdlife, and distant ridges.
- Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner.
Day 3
Scenic Lake Kivu Transit to Foothills of the Volcanoes
Enjoy a slow breakfast overlooking the emerald tea estates before packing your bags. Today, your journey takes you north along the scenic shoreline of Lake Kivu, one of Africa’s Great Lakes. The drive is exceptionally beautiful, winding past quiet lakeside villages, traditional fishing docks, and dramatic vistas of the blue water framed by steep hillsides.
Stop for a fresh, lakeside lunch in the resort town of Rubavu, where you can dip your toes in the water and share stories with local residents. In the afternoon, continue your drive upward into the dramatic Virunga Mountains, arriving at your luxury lodge near Volcanoes National Park as the evening fog settles over the peaks.
- Drive Time: Approximately 4–5 hours.
- Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner.
Day 5
Golden Monkey Tracking & Authentic Cultural Evening
Enter the forest at sunrise for a lighter, highly playful primate encounter: tracking the endangered Golden Monkeys. Found exclusively within the Virunga volcanic corridor, these unique monkeys live in large social groups within the bamboo zones. Watch them leap acrobatically between bamboo stalks, flash their rich golden coats in the morning light, and chew on fresh shoots right in front of your camera.
In the afternoon, discover the rich human stories of the region with a visit to the Gorilla Guardians Cultural Village (Iby’Iwacu). Meet former poachers who have turned into conservation champions, try your hand at traditional archery, listen to ancient folk songs, and learn about the historic traditions of the Rwandan kingdom.
-
- Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner.
Day 6
Kigali City Overview & Farewell to Rwanda
Enjoy a final morning coffee looking up at the towering volcanic peaks before starting your journey back to the capital. Arrive in Kigali by midday and embark on a private, reflective visit to the Kigali Genocide Memorial, an essential experience for understanding the incredible resilience and unity of modern Rwanda.
