Tour Itinerary

Day 1

Welcome to Kigali & Journey to Akagera National Park

Your adventure begins early this morning with a warm pickup from your hotel or Kigali International Airport by your dedicated Saventra Safaris guide. Leaving Africa’s cleanest city behind, you will journey eastward toward Akagera National Park. The landscape quickly transforms from bustling urban streets into rolling hills and expansive acacia woodlands.
Arrive at your lodge in time for a relaxed, warm lunch. In the afternoon, embark on your first introductory game drive, searching for zebras, giraffes, and elegant impalas. Wind down your day listening to the ambient sounds of the savanna waking up as the African sun dips below the horizon.
  • Drive Time: Approximately 2.5–3 hours.
  • Meals: Lunch and Dinner.

Day 2

Morning Big Five Safari & Lake Ihema Boat Cruise

Wake up early to the sound of early morning birdsong. After a quick coffee, head out for a sunrise game drive across the northern tracks of the park. This is prime time for predators; your expert guide will help you spot lions returning from their night hunts, elusive leopards draped in acacia branches, and massive herds of Cape buffalo.
Return to the lodge for a midday rest and lunch. In the afternoon, experience the centerpiece of the wetlands: a 2-hour boat safari along Lake Ihema. This vast body of water boasts one of the dense populations of hippos in East Africa. Watch elephants bathe at the water’s edge, Nile crocodiles sun themselves on the banks, and rare birds like the African Fish Eagle dive for prey just meters from your boat.
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner.

Day 3

Scenic Cross-Country Transit to Volcanoes National Park

Enjoy a slow, hearty breakfast overlooking the park before packing your bags. Today, your journey takes you west across the heart of Rwanda, winding back through Kigali before ascending into the dramatic Virunga Mountains. The drive is exceptionally scenic, earning Rwanda its title as the “Land of a Thousand Hills” as you pass hand-terraced green slopes, vibrant country markets, and misty valleys.
Stop for a fresh local lunch along the way. In the afternoon, arrive at the bustling town of Musanze at the foothills of the volcanoes. Settle into your premium forest lodge, where you can watch the evening fog gently roll over the dramatic volcanic peaks.
  • Drive Time: Approximately 4.5–5 hours.
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner.

Day 4

The Ultimate Mountain Gorilla Trekking Experience

This is the moment that completely redefines travel. After an early breakfast, transfer directly to the park headquarters at Kinigi. Sip premium local coffee while enjoying an educational briefing on gorilla trekking etiquette. You will be assigned to a specific gorilla family based on your preferred hiking pace.
Accompanied by specialized tracking scouts and armed park rangers, step into the misty bamboo forests and open volcanic ridges. The trek can take anywhere from 1 to 4 hours, but all physical effort instantly melts away when your guide parts the leaves. Reveal a wild gorilla family resting, playing, and grooming just steps away. Spending one quiet hour looking into the soulful brown eyes of a giant silverback patriarch is a profoundly humbling experience. In the afternoon, discover local traditions at the Gorilla Guardians Cultural Village to share stories, archery demonstrations, and authentic dances with the local community.
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner.

Day 5

Twin Lakes Visual Journey & Return Transfer to Kigali

Enjoy your morning coffee looking up at the towering volcanic peaks before checking out. Before returning to the capital, take a short drive to the stunning Twin Lakes of Burera and Ruhondo. Following this scenic stop, begin your comfortable return journey to Kigali.
